I forgot that I had meant to blog on this topic.  I am in my twentieth year as a CC adjunct.  After teaching developmental college reading for eight years, I was recently told by my department head that I couldn't teach reading anymore.  The college had just done a degree audit and I don't have my master's in reading with an additional 18 hour certificate in adult reading.  After some investigation, I discovered that the college has received a large grant and one of the requirements was that all teachers had to have the right degrees.  Since my master's is in English, not reading, I am now back to the life of a composition teacher.  That means grading essays every weekend for seven or eight hours in addition to planning and actual teaching during the week.  And the reading classes are being taught by young teachers with the correct degrees who have no experience with teaching reading in a community college.  I met one in the adjunct office who had just been hired, and had absolutely no idea what to do.  No one had given her any information.  So I spent about an hour helping her.  I was reminded of those workers who lose their jobs to overseas workers who are forced to train their replacements.
